As the temperature decreases and winter approaches, Dubai shows its amazing beauty, characterized by fresh air and clear blue sky. The start of the season brings foggy mornings around the city.

Fog develops in the winter season due to changes in the atmospheric conditions as heat at ground level falls rapidly.  The accumulation of water vapor in the presence of moisture is what leads to the production of fog. Driving in foggy conditions can be difficult due to low visibility and navigating the roads.

Here are some methods to improve visibility during fog in the winter:

  1. Low Beam Lights: Using low beam lights allows us to prevent glare produced by fog reflections.  The use of low-beam headlights also allows drivers coming from the opposite way to see us well and avoid collisions. Fog lights can be used to increase visibility.

  1. Clean Windshield and Windows: Ahead of a journey, ensure that the dirt and moisture on the windshield and windows are cleaned properly. A mild detergent may be used to clean the windshield and windows. Use only a microfiber cloth to wipe the surface. Other cleaning cloths may scratch or streak the surface.

  1. Park Safely: If the road visibility is extremely poor, it is better to pull the vehicle to a safe lane, keeping the hazard lights on to alert the other motorists.

  1. Windshield Wipers: Replace your wipers before the winter season starts, especially if the rubber brush is worn or damaged. It generates a scraping noise when the wiper moves from one side to the other. A worn-out wiper brush can cause scratches on the windshield and poor surface cleaning. AC defrost can be switched on to absorb moisture and fog to keep the windshield and windows clean. Use the rear windshield wiper continuously to ensure visibility of vehicles in the back.

  1. Fog Repellent Coating: The fog buildup during the winter season can be prevented by fog-repellent coating on the windows and windshield.  This improves driving visibility in night conditions too. Installation of GPS or a dash camera can assist the driver in difficult weather conditions.

What are the measures to be taken for safe driving during a foggy winter?

  • Drive at slow speed. As visibility gets poor, maintain a safe distance with the vehicle ahead to help prevent a collision.
  • Align your vehicle along the road markings for safe driving.
  • Focus and concentrate on the road by avoiding distractions such as a mobile phone or stereo. Seek help from co-passengers and request them to keenly monitor the road traffic.
  • Keep the brakes, tyre, AC, and engine in good condition ahead of extreme climatic seasons.

Preventing fog is impossible in winter, but with preventive measures and safe driving practices, poor visibility caused by fogging can be overcome.
