A Guide on How to Safely Drive in Rainy Weather - Carcility
Car care

It is quite unsafe to drive on rainy days as roads turn slippery and drivers may lose control of the vehicle due to loss of friction in tyres. Poor visibility may also hamper safe driving during such weather conditions. However, with a little care and precaution, driving can be made safe and comfortable on rainy days.

Here’s a guide on how to safely drive in rainy weather

Tyre Pressure and Tread: Tyres must be inspected for pressure and tread depth. Underinflated tyres and overinflated tyres can lead to loss of control on roads. Tyres that lack sufficient depth may cause accidents as required friction is not obtained when the brakes are applied. During periodic service, tyre rotation is done to prevent uneven wear of tyres.

Windshield Wipers: Visibility is affected during rainy days if there is dust and moisture on the windshield. Ensure the windshield wiper reservoir has water mixed with detergent and the windshield blades are in good condition to prevent streaks while wiping the water on the surface.

Headlights and Fog Lamps: Clean the headlight assembly and ensure the bulbs provide sufficient brightness to see what is ahead of the vehicle at a sufficiently good distance. The brake lights, indicators, and reverse lights must be functioning properly to serve as a guide for other motorists.

AC and Defrosting: Make sure the air conditioner is in perfect condition, as the windows have to be fully closed while driving. Ensure the thermostat and weather control are working perfectly and hot air is generated if needed.  The defrosters have to work perfectly to remove fog on the windshield, which affects visibility.

Reduced Speed: When it is raining, the vehicle may lose control due to hydroplaning. This is caused when a layer of water is created between the tyres and the road surface. This leads to loss of friction. Hence, it is recommended to drive at lower speeds.

Brake Condition: Ensure that the brakes are working properly and prevent hard braking to maintain control of the vehicle.

Avoid Flooded Roads: Look for notifications about flooded roads and keep off such roads. Water entering the engine compartment can cause damage to the vehicle and also compromise the safety of the passengers.

By following simple safety protocols and keeping the vehicle in good condition, driving on rainy days can be made safe and comfortable.
