An automobile may be unable to operate without a battery, which provides the electrical power needed to start the engine. When the engine is turned off, the battery powers everything electronic, like the lights, stereo, and horn.

Therefore, car battery maintenance and service must be given utmost importance for the smooth functioning of the vehicle.

  1. Regular Inspection: A battery has to be regularly checked for voltage levels, especially before the onset of winter or summer seasons when there is variation in atmospheric temperature. A drop in voltage can affect the functioning of the battery and reduce its life.
  1. Terminal Cleaning: Battery terminals have to be cleaned periodically to prevent corrosion, which may affect it’s performance. Corrosion can occur due to overcharging, exposure to moisture, humidity, and chemical reactions. When the electrolyte or sulfuric acid in the battery leaks, it may react with air or other substances and corrode the terminals.
  2. Turn off Lights, Stereo: When the engine is off, all the lights and stereo should be turned off to avoid drainage of battery voltage. Repeated such events can shorten the lifespan of the battery.
  3. Battery Fastening: Ensure that the battery is securely positioned and doesn’t vibrate or shake inside the battery compartment. Vibration can cause damage to the battery and shorten its life.  If required, special hold down hardware can be used to secure the batteries in position.
  4. Long Trips: Ensure that you take long trips occasionally so that the battery gets sufficient time to charge itself and remain in good condition. During short trips, the car battery may not be sufficiently charged and therefore lose its power over time.
  5. Overcharging: Battery life may be compromised due to persistent overcharging or undercharging, which can cause damage to car batteries and reduce it’s life.

A weak battery is indicated by a battery sign appearing red on the dashboard. If the starter motor has to be repeatedly cranked, it is an indication of battery damage. Weak lights and horns also indicate draining of charge. Jump-starting of batteries can also cause damage and should be resorted to only in emergency situations.

Car battery life is usually four years, but in extreme heat conditions, the battery life may get reduced compared to cold conditions. However, proper care of batteries with periodic inspection and checks along with adequate running of the vehicle in long distances can ensure a healthy battery performance for up to five years. Replace the worn-out battery with the battery of the right specification to avoid electrical system issues.
